John Dog

Courage and Foolishness with a Hint of Alcoholic Depression — that’s how an outside observer might describe detective John Dog in just a few words… and be completely wrong. Seasoned John is a man of action, loyal to his friends and his cause—granted, a little slow on the uptake, which makes him a rather questionable detective.

We meet him at far from the brightest point in his life—but for very valid reasons, ones that anyone who’s been through the fire would understand. All the player needs to know is that John Dog is a brave and kind soul. And if, by chance, you ever want to make his day, offer him a mighty peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Old John, by the numbers:

  • 1947 – A lively boy named John is born. His middle name has been lost to time, as John was always ashamed of it and carefully kept it secret (likely Meryl, in honor of his grandmother). After school, he followed in his father’s footsteps and enrolled in the police academy, spending his whole life on the force—until that one damned shootout.
  • 1984 – He retires. The reason: the tragic death of his partner, for which he bitterly blames himself.
  • 1985 – Opens the John Dog Detective Agency.
  • 1988 – Sets off for the mysterious Mr. Ashfish’s Distant Rehab in hopes of getting his life back on track—only to encounter some truly bizarre circumstances.

Mr. Ashfish

The mysterious owner of Mr. Ashfish’s Distant Rehab. Once a luxurious, high-end mountain hotel, the establishment has long lost its former glory. Keeping up with trends isn’t easy—and its remote location in the mountains didn’t help either. In order to survive, the hotel lowered its standards and reinvented itself as a budget rehab center. Today, it offers a getaway at an unbelievably low price—something that detective John Dog finds deeply suspicious. The meeting between Mr. Ashfish and detective Dog won’t take long now. Which means answers are coming. And new questions, too.

Martha

The landlady of the office that John Dog rents for his detective agency. Truth be told, Martha seems more like John’s housekeeper than a detached landlord collecting rent. On the contrary, watching the poor man slowly unravel his life seems to weigh heavily on her heart. She looks after the detective, almost like a mother would a son—though she’d never admit it out loud.

Martha’s personal life is uneventful, and we know very little about it. What is known for certain is that she collects gloves with strange patterns and adores Tom Jones, carefully preserving every one of his records.

Still, one can never rule out devils in still waters—her concern and attention toward detective Dog are just a little too suspicious. Should John be wary of this overly helpful matron? Or is it just his cop instincts talking?..
